Happy Holidays to everyone and a safe journey for those of you that are traveling!

2007 has been an amazing year for Martial Arts. We saw some major changes in karate with the USOC and the NGB for karate plus the coming together of so many leaders in West Virginia at the National Championship. The MMA has taken off in a big way with so many new groups and television shows. The ISKF leaving the JKA another big split for karate yet at the same time others are coming together. This seems to be the trend some wish to have more tradition than sport and others are looking for more ways to work together.

We here at American Samurai are expanding our out reach. We recently moved our dojo and are having a fantastic time working at our new dojo with so many fine instructors and capable business minds.Training at White Tiger Martial Arts working with Master Rondy and Master Chang is a great experience. I believe our students will benefit tremendously from this opportunity. We expect that more will be joining us.

Recently we did a photo shoot for Tae Kwon do Times, and have plenty of content in the pipeline for our readers too. We look forward to working together with you all – regards Bill Bly

2008 Ozawa Cup - Las Vegas Nevada - March 20th thru 23rd

The Ozawa Cup has for years been the showcase event for traditional karate. We have always enjoyed this event and year after year made new friends as we attended. The finals have always been the best source for images of not only the athletes competing but also the master demonstrations. The Ozawa cup is not just a tournament it truly is an event. Hosted by our good friend James Tawatao of Las Vegas Shotokan year after year he and his staff work diligently to make this a world-class event bringing in the great masters from around the world to teach at the seminars and attracting competitors from the entire world regardless of affiliation. Sensei Ozawa was a visionary and the Ozawa Cups mission to bring karateka to work together in an apolitical manner remains one of its greatest attributes.

John Fonseca's "Kumite Concepts: The Winning Edge"

Plenty of top instructors have ordered this DVD - Don't miss out!

This project has been 7 years in the making. Fonseca puts it all together in one DVD. This video is a must have for anyone serious about competition, considering competing and can be a great tool for instructors and coaches.
"My idea with this DVD was to pack as much information as possible in a very detailed and organized manner, so that competitors can use it as a reference guide. With the DVD menu, the viewer can instantly go to any chapter or sub-chapter, and watch the techniques performed both slowly and fast with voice over commentary and a written key points page to reinforce what they have learned. The chapters include concepts such as “Basic Attacks, Fighting Strategies, Technical Training, Counter attacks, Timing Drills, Corner Drills, and Takedowns”. It took seven years to finish this work, so quite honestly, I didn’t know if I would get around to doing another one. You can never take anything for granted, so since I was healthy enough to do these techniques now, we shot all of these concepts to use for this one production. However, I have already started the next project, so hopefully I can finish this one before I am in the seniors division."

Periodization: Failure to Plan, Is Planning to Fail - Part II

Multi-Peak Planning

In sport-karate, where the competition season usually spans from February to October, primitive periodization plans with only one peak, known as a mono-cycles, are not compatible with the number of major events an athlete is required to attend.

Junior National Team members ages 14-20 are required to peak at five events throughout the year: the Junior Olympics / U.S. Open, Regional Qualifier, U.S. Team Trials, Pan American Championships, Junior World Championships.
Senior National Team members ages 18+ are also required to peak at six events throughout the year; the U.S. Open, Regional Qualifier, U.S. Team Trials, Pan American Games, World University Games, World Championships.

2008 National Seminar Proposal
Dr. Alex Sternberg

2008 National Karate Education Seminars
in conjunction with our National Meeting Texas

I propose that we streamline all the courses presently offered at the National Meeting and Championships in order to maximize the experience for all who attend and allow maximum participation by all.

Referee Course:

Streamline the national course to maximum of one day (preferably to half a day offered twice at two different times) As the questions for testing (kata and kumite) are already on line encourage all those wishing to take test to get on line and take test prior to arriving Don’t worry about cheating or collaboration. Every referee should be registered with an identifying number and they must take at least one course locally prior to attending national test. (Each local course will be given a numerical value in Continuing Educational Credit CEC with a minimum numbered needed by all to maintain or advance in level/status more information

Cyrus Madani Updates on officiating and more
Dear Referee Friends;

I would like to congratulate Mr. Miladi for his hard work and endeavors in setting up the referee blog. I’m sure it will be a valuable communication tool for all referees that will strengthen our referee community. I am proud to be a member of this community, for I have learned a great deal and owe my success to you, my referee colleagues. To give back to this community, I would like to share a very short history of my karate referee career in the hope that it would help others be more successful referees. read more

Some lessons Beyond Words - sensei John McClary

Every dojo has a character that likes to act as a drill sergeant. Some are appointed and some are self ordained. In Philly we had a one who was self ordained, one with a big mouth. He would very often yell out commentary after Sensei Kisaka (who we affectionately called Mr. K) would give instructions and this was annoying to us, but he was one of the sempei and he was an older man. All of the kids would mimic Sergeant when he wasn’t looking. We knew not to get caught because he was Sensei Okazaki’s buddy.Read more

Master Masaaki Ueki 6th dan and Master Osaka 5th dan fighting in 1971 after having won in 1965, 67, 68 and leaving Japan and the Kenshusei (instructors training program to teach in Florida) this Sword Saint would return and again refuse to lose. The final outcome would see him placing 2nd in the science of forms.
An Interview with Sandra Beutler - By Pat Taniguchi

(PT): You have won Nationals 8 times, and also the All Tokyo Senior Championships. What are some highlights from past competitions?

(SB): Kumite of course! I think some of the best highlights of competing in general are the feelings of accomplishment. When you train so hard and for so many months you finally get to that goal, that moment where it all counts and when it’s finished you feel completed. The past couple of years I have sustained serious injuries to my ankle and knee but with determination and encouragement from my Sensei I was able to come out on top, I did the best I could do. read more
